It is THAT time of the year again, parents across the nation are preparing for a rest day, the first day of school. But, before that day comes there is a couple of things that parents must do, well they feel that they must do, feel that their child wants them to do, feel that the teachers and other kids parents want them to do (but not ‘better’ than they do), and that is to cover textbooks, exercise books and reading writing and maths books, label everything with initials and names, lunch boxes, drink bottles, hats and bags. I have one thing to say to all those parents involved in this little caper, and that is to have a good hard loving look at the property you are preparing to send off with your youngens’ this year, cause it’s probably the last time you will see it.
So, as you may probably tell from the above, I have been battling ‘contact’, sure it looks great on the roll child three had selected various popular themes such as ’spiderman’, transformers etc, unfortunately this great looking contact turns out to be that crappy foil stuff that is really hard to work with and one roll didn’t even stick to the book I was swearing at, so now with half of the books done, I now have to face another four books tomorrow. Not happy. But I have all day.
So, I have done the ‘good parent’ thing and covered and labelled everything, except the lunch box and drink bottle, as they will probably not go missing but rather come home in a destroyed state. No kid pinches the broken stuff. Pity.
Guess I should scrounge around for the uniform, they are here somewhere, probably in a draw, it will do for this year, it’s just a uniform, grade four this year, how exciting, oh and a male teacher to top that off. It should be a good year.
Child two has secured a job at the place he did his ‘work experience’ at, how fun, hope it works out ok, he will not be going back to school this year, he has hated it for a couple of years… and it shows. Child one going back to Tafe to start the Diploma of Community Welfare, hope she does well with that, and I have enrolled to finish the second year of the Diploma, since the job has fallen through (they moved most production about two hours away), so I had better do something. CentrePricks don’t like you doing nothing.

Bit of a shame you couldn’t work a bit more change in to the week. What, two people’s jobs, two TAFE courses and some new books? You couldn’t change your footy team, move house and swap cuttlery with the old bag next door? Gee….some people just don’t know how to bring variety in to their lives.
Good luck with the job, course, course and Grade 4 though.

brings back ##@**!!#&** memories
in the “olden” days we had to cover books with brown paper and the threat was if you didnt then the teacher would cover them with newspaper. then some showoff parents used plastic and we all had to use plastic, same threat of newspaper if you didnt. one year I covered all mine with newspaper and they tore it off. later some showoff parents (probably the same ones) used contact and … you guessed it … we all had to do contact. beats me why any of it because the stupid books had covers in the first place. some enterprising company came up with personalised pencils (order names printed on) so I am surprised they havent thought of pre-covered books. nope – schools would probably want covers on the covers.
and as for uniforms, I have never heard one valid reason for spending all that money on over priced over rated clothing. apart from team sports and stage performance what is their point of all students looking alike? its all about fear of individual thought and exercise of CONTROLLLL.
well thank you for the opportunity to say those few words.

Don’t hold back Nicki……tell us how you really feel!
Jury – good point. I’m in no position to argue that 25 years of a singular lack of success is reason to change footy teams.
Nicki – There is still plenty of time to fight The System…..although my old Socialist friends are starting to doubt my repeated claims to be bringing capitalism down from the inside!

Oh my lord, they wouldn’t dare rip the covers off the books these days, I like the newspaper idea though, I will keep that in mind for next year. But thanks for the ‘Snoopy’ paper all those years ago.
Scoop, the last footy game I went to (to watch) was the night match Coll v’s Rich… (with you) and you ask me why I hang on to Richmond. Some wins are worth the long long agonising wait.
