A day in the tuckshop?….Hmmm, Sure why not…..

November 11, 2008

So, I volunteered to spend the day in the school tuckshop. Sounds easy enough, you girls seem to handle it ok, it doesn’t look that hard, sure, I will give it a go.

Firstly, it seems that you must select a subject, person or recent event to whinge and bitch about for the entire day. That was easily selected as a)it’s coming upto the end of the year, b)what’s’her name wasn’t there and c) the PRINCIPAL had the nerve (made an error) to cancel OUR P&C meeting the night before. Once that had been sorted out it’s down to business, eg: running the tuckshop.

Take orders for lunch and morning tea from the kids and staff who wait at the window. (What can I get for this much?). Then when the bell goes for the start of the day, each class sends down their lunch-order basket from each room. Then we sort out the correct payments and log what has been ordered for each break and stack them in a big pile according to grade (and I am sure, alphabetically).

Once we have determined exactly what food has been ordered for the morning tea, we rummage through the fridges and the freezer finding all the items and then we start putting things into various heating devices located in the aging tuckshop kitchen. I search frantically for the different coloured cutting boards (just grab any colour).

I checked the dates on everything so naturally I declared most of the stock as out of date and un-usable (yeah but we use it anyway cause it’s ok……), I then take a couple of moments out of this routine to amend Joshs lunch order as I do not wish him to consume a hotdog that expired in August. I suggested that they should watch out for these dated products cause they can not use them after the best before dates. They seem to think they are ok to use as they were donated the stock. I asked if that included the milk….? As most of those were four days past their use by dates……. I threw them out.

Is now a bad time to ask all you ladies where your hairnets are ? I found the gloves ok… I thought P&C paid for you guys to attend the food safety program….? I think we should send you all to the free one that the council run every year……

Ok so, it gets to about 10 minutes to 11o’clock and it is time to bag up all the kids morning tea orders, firstly we set each grades baskets on the bench then someone sorts out all the bags into the baskets, then we all just collect the bags from one basket at a time and fill each bag with the correct order. phew.

Then the kids come to collect each classes basket. Then tuckshop opens for the rush….. about 35 kids line up waiting for service……. easy, I kept asking for prices of everything…. mainly drinks… until someone said, Janelle all the drinks are $1.50….. Oh I say, you could have told me that earlier….Oh except the large milks (I threw them out), the slushy things, the hot drinks and the lemonade drinks…..Ok, so two types of drinks are $1.50.

Then we have a rush to repeat the collection of refrigerated and frozen foods to start all over again on the lunch orders. One they are in all those heating apparatuses we have a break…. about half an hour, we sit, have a cuppa and a sandwich and get down to the bitching, which was entertaining.

Then the lunch break starts, collection of the baskets repeats itself and a bigger line up appears at the service windows. After a hectic 20 minutes of icecream lollies and slushy drink orders combined with a few noodle orders and a hot chocolate we can clean up, count the monies and get the hell out of the tuckshop. Interrupted only by the appearance of the principal, we voiced our opinion, had our say and we did not accept his appology, we then escaped the confines of the brick hot house.

So, we will see you tomorrow then….. Not likely, but I think I will be here on Friday for the stocktake …. We’re not having a stocktake on Friday…. You are now, cya….

I have a feeling that all the expired stock will have been thrown out by Friday….

I am so tired.
