A family member has……..issues.

December 8, 2007

Well, this is really sad let me tell you, one of our family members has suddenly presented with some ( or at least one) heavy issues. This much loved family member is now displaying severe aggressive behaviours (three of us have the scars to prove it too) that are just not on in this house. These outbursts may be accepted practice in say Inala, Redfern or Caroline Springs, but not here under my roof.

This behaviour is so unpredictable we are walking around on ‘tender hooks’ ‘watching our backs’ and ‘keeping a smile on our faces despite the uncertainty’, I suspect that this offender can sense our fear and can now ‘work out’ how to maintain life in the general public in order to get attention ……. then strike.

Child two and three are scared physically and emotionally, it’s so bad that they don’t want to be anywhere near her, I feel a little different, I know how much care, attention and love that had been dedicated to her, but … something must be done, this must change before we all run to our rooms, lock the doors, get under our doonas and cry ourselves to sleep.

Oh, I think I should mention to whom I am referring, our cat Maddy has turned on us.

We just don’t understand what has happened to promote this characteristic. Our best theory is that she saw another cat, freaked out……and now attacks us, not just play or play-fight, she full on wants to attack us, all of us, she started on child three (then me as I needed to separate screaming child three from his attacker), then she moved on to me until I got her into the garage, Child three and I then managed to ‘lick our wounds’ fix ourselves up with dettol and a couple of band-aids (about 16), then needed to calm child three down enough to get him to bed without thinking about the ‘attack-cat’.

Child two sadly missed the intensity of the first episode (even thought it was slightly comical until I encouraged him to ‘let the cat out’) but he heard the commotion and came to investigate the noise. The cat was hissing, meowing and clawing at the door to get out, ‘let her calm down for a bit first’ I say, needless to say that my wounds were throbbing at the thought of allowing the cat anywhere near me again anytime this century.

About three hours later, child two (not I) feels that it is time to ‘check the cat out’ (if this were a hotel, I would have) so we chat to the dear little puss cat (through the garage door) is a friendly manner, to which she meows back at us in her usual tone… (FIRST MISTAKE) we slightly open the door to be received by a lovely friendly cat, meowing gently, rubbing against our legs and looking for a pat………… I silently sneak into the garage as she slowly walks into the loungeroom so I can change her litter box fill up the water and food bowls (just in case), turn and walk out of garage and stand close to the door. Child two then walks with her into the garage, like following her (all this time talking sweetly to her), then she strikes again only this time she has a larger victim… child two at this point now realises what child three and myself were trying to tell him….. 38 scratches later I prise mad cat off child two only for the little bugger to attack me again….. although this time armed with the end of the vacuum she still manages to rip me open. Ok, cat back in garage this time for the night.

Day two, starts like every other day, mad morning, hurriedly get organised for work x1 and school x2, leave house. Child/adult one gets up lazily, showers, gets ready for work, feeds dog (another long story) lets the cat out of the garage, pats cat, picks up and cuddles cat, puts her down on the floor (not in garage) (despite the ‘do not let cat out’ sign on garage door) lets the cat have free range of house, then goes to work.

I would never actually know how it feels to walk into a house knowing full well that an axe murderer was in there, but I get the gist of it.

Child two notices that cat has entered the garage and promptly shuts the door. One hour later we open the door for her as she is growling and scratching, to be greeted by a ‘nice kitty’ for about two minutes before we hear ‘that sound’ emitting from her throat, we take cover, we arm ourselves, one ran in fear….. managed to get her into the garage without any new scars.

Day three, early morning…….. manage to slip into garage (wearing long pants and full jumper) and with razor cuts throbbing, fill her food bowl and change water and litter tray while hissing snarling puss watches from the roof of the Kingswood, then she escapes the garage, oh great … child three is watching TV……….she lovingly walks to child three who through gritted teeth and shaking body says…. awwww nice puss puss…. he pats her…. and survives…. she then wanders over to me meows loudly and gets a gentle pat….. she allows me to pick her up (which I think was a trick to get close to my face), she tenses up, her hair raises and I gently put her down, then she attacks, child three runs for cover, I endure more slices and puss is back in the garage…. sigh……

The cat allows myself and Brother Scoop into the garage, under watchful eye, to retrieve an item (that was not too big to trow at puss if I had to), she doesn’t move a muscle or blink an eyelid, we exit garage without Scoop experiencing any grief what so ever. We have dinner, then child two lets the puss out, big mistake….. he now has a whole new set of injuries and he hates the cat… doesn’t want the cat in the house…… sigh.

Dear little puss is off to the vets on Wednesday morning (after collecting cage the night before) to get a physical, if that shows nothing…. then maybe Valium for cats.. I will keep you all posted (maybe I should say I will keep you all blogged)..

News this week, I finished work, child two finished school for this year, the dog will be returned to its rightful owners, child/adult one is getting too many hours at work, cookie dough comes in a one kilo bucket, Christmas is getting way too close and the bloody cat has gone mad, so all in all, I must say it has been a fairly normal week.
