A day in the tuckshop?….Hmmm, Sure why not…..

November 11, 2008 by jury1404

So, I volunteered to spend the day in the school tuckshop. Sounds easy enough, you girls seem to handle it ok, it doesn’t look that hard, sure, I will give it a go.

Firstly, it seems that you must select a subject, person or recent event to whinge and bitch about for the entire day. That was easily selected as a)it’s coming upto the end of the year, b)what’s’her name wasn’t there and c) the PRINCIPAL had the nerve (made an error) to cancel OUR P&C meeting the night before. Once that had been sorted out it’s down to business, eg: running the tuckshop.

Take orders for lunch and morning tea from the kids and staff who wait at the window. (What can I get for this much?). Then when the bell goes for the start of the day, each class sends down their lunch-order basket from each room. Then we sort out the correct payments and log what has been ordered for each break and stack them in a big pile according to grade (and I am sure, alphabetically).

Once we have determined exactly what food has been ordered for the morning tea, we rummage through the fridges and the freezer finding all the items and then we start putting things into various heating devices located in the aging tuckshop kitchen. I search frantically for the different coloured cutting boards (just grab any colour).

I checked the dates on everything so naturally I declared most of the stock as out of date and un-usable (yeah but we use it anyway cause it’s ok……), I then take a couple of moments out of this routine to amend Joshs lunch order as I do not wish him to consume a hotdog that expired in August. I suggested that they should watch out for these dated products cause they can not use them after the best before dates. They seem to think they are ok to use as they were donated the stock. I asked if that included the milk….? As most of those were four days past their use by dates……. I threw them out.

Is now a bad time to ask all you ladies where your hairnets are ? I found the gloves ok… I thought P&C paid for you guys to attend the food safety program….? I think we should send you all to the free one that the council run every year……

Ok so, it gets to about 10 minutes to 11o’clock and it is time to bag up all the kids morning tea orders, firstly we set each grades baskets on the bench then someone sorts out all the bags into the baskets, then we all just collect the bags from one basket at a time and fill each bag with the correct order. phew.

Then the kids come to collect each classes basket. Then tuckshop opens for the rush….. about 35 kids line up waiting for service……. easy, I kept asking for prices of everything…. mainly drinks… until someone said, Janelle all the drinks are $1.50….. Oh I say, you could have told me that earlier….Oh except the large milks (I threw them out), the slushy things, the hot drinks and the lemonade drinks…..Ok, so two types of drinks are $1.50.

Then we have a rush to repeat the collection of refrigerated and frozen foods to start all over again on the lunch orders. One they are in all those heating apparatuses we have a break…. about half an hour, we sit, have a cuppa and a sandwich and get down to the bitching, which was entertaining.

Then the lunch break starts, collection of the baskets repeats itself and a bigger line up appears at the service windows. After a hectic 20 minutes of icecream lollies and slushy drink orders combined with a few noodle orders and a hot chocolate we can clean up, count the monies and get the hell out of the tuckshop. Interrupted only by the appearance of the principal, we voiced our opinion, had our say and we did not accept his appology, we then escaped the confines of the brick hot house.

So, we will see you tomorrow then….. Not likely, but I think I will be here on Friday for the stocktake …. We’re not having a stocktake on Friday…. You are now, cya….

I have a feeling that all the expired stock will have been thrown out by Friday….

I am so tired.

Wow, last night I straightened my hair. I have now decided that a) I have too much hair and b) straightened extremely curly hair tend to return to its ‘curly’ state as you are out walking and it happens to rain. Anyway, that was an interesting couple of hours. So, I straightened my hair again this morning but this time I shall stay indoors which kinda defeats the purpose of ‘doing’ my hair. Thankfully I have to wear a hat at work so I can continue to grow the curly mass of hair until I can tie it up. It is actually quite long especially when it is straight.

I continue to be called Jan at work, curses to Coles, as that was the closest name to mine in the stack of ‘new employee badges’ that was available. Even thought I have had a Janelle badge for about eight weeks now they continue to call Jan, and when I answer the phone I have to say ‘Jan speaking’ just so they know who it is. Jan is not a bad name it’s just that I do have my own name, I tend to respond to it slightly more often than someone elses name. Funny that….

Just incase you guys are a little bored I have included a little creativity, just click on the link and enjoy yourself for a while, or an hour or so.

So, in any case, we are all still alive and well. Car is still crappy, work is still there, people come and go, phone calls are a-plenty, we still lack sleep for the majority of the week and the bloody cat is still here.

Apart from that there is no news.

Until the next exciting episode of no news, be well, eat plentiful and and and … be well.

When is the best time to blog?

  • Work
  • Tafe
  • Placement
  • P&C
  • Family

There we go, I sort of divided up into categories what I have been doing for the past couple of weeks. Just those few dot-points about pretty much sums up everything.

Oh, but in between all those things (that sound less time consuming) there are those little things that we all really should be doing, you know, like cooking, washing, cleaning, eating, vacuuming, obtaining fuel, going shopping and better add sleep to that list as well. Not to mention the daily updates from the other house-dwellers and the latest Play Station accomplishments.

Work is going fine, it is still there and am now receiving regular hours….. not regular shifts (that’s for sure), though, so can not really plan much to match up with my (non-existent) social life. This week I get to do the opening, sadly that means a 5am start, but I like the mornings, work is over and done with by about 6am, the rest of the day is filled by me (and many many others) just trying to look busy, yes, I can do that.

Next item, ah yes Tafe, well Tafe is moving along just fine and dandy, we only have the rest of this term to go and then off to do our 200 hours of placement. I am going along to some ATSI organisation, to meet with whoever to do whatever…… Don’t really know what I will get upto over there but should be very interesting anyway. Don’t really know where it is or when I get to start, all I know is that I have been assured that they will be flexible with hours. That’ll do me. This week, we have to visit a crappy island to listen to locals whinge about living on a crappy island. Sound like fun ? No, it does not.

P&C, well, they can go jump….. or rather find someone else they can ask to jump hoops.

That brings us to the last dot point…. Family, I have not caught up with local members of the family (see point one) but as I have not been rostered on this week-end, I plan to be home and waiting visit. Called far far away family member for her Birthday and got the answering machine on which we left a messege hoping that she has a wonderful day. Speaking of Birthdays, child three is now 9, and we got him an electric scooter, hours of fun, oh and a DS….. more hours of fun. Soon to be nephew one’s Birthday ….

I am ever so tired, oh and cranky… I think it’s age related, maybe it is work related.

Whatever……

It is okay to visit your past just don’t bring any luggage with you……

sigh…… I am so tired, there is so much work to do for Tafe, the house is getting grotty, the lawn is getting long, my sons need haircuts, P&C needs attention,  collect child one in the middle of the night from work, someone needs to go shopping, I forgot the milk…. never mind the toilet paper, Book fair, library day, school photos, CentrePricks, fuel up, washing out, change sheets, pay bills, do some homework, his and mine, run in with gastra, pulled a muscle in my back hugging the toilet one night…….. It has been one of those weeks really.

Managed to fit in a whole 15 minutes of gardening today, cutting down all the dead branches of the palms, they are now all over the grass so happily you can’t see the long long grass now. Started weeding until I discovered where all the green ants live.

Pulled out all the winter clothes for child three, the other two can darn well do it themselves, so the poor kid went to school with trackies about two inches too short…..sigh.

Didn’t see Scoop and SIL….K this morning…. didn’t want to give them gastro.

Invited ‘friend’ around today cause I hoped to give them gastro… see in a couple of days if that worked. Another friend of ours called in, but their family has already been dosed with the chuck-bug, so hopefully they are immune to it now. Hope so.

Tafe has been interesting this past couple of weeks, there is one girl in our class who at the thought or the mere suggestion of any ‘non-victim’ related need for any sort of ‘welfare’ or ‘assistance’ or ‘mediation’ or ‘advocacy’, flings herself into a sobbing frenzy and usually dramatically exits the building claiming that it is all too hard and she will never return. Heaven forbid someone claiming that a rapist is a human…. Oh dear, …. ok, I realise that this girl has had a hard time, but the minute she exits being a bloody victim every second of the day, she might actually enjoy some parts of her life. I am not being tough on her, this study has lifted her greatly, so I am told, but she continues to avoid such matters … like some people in society are upto no good, some people in society are offenders, and some are child molesters and rapists.. (I can hear her packing her bags now). Now she claims that next year she is going to study Child Protection, oh no one of our teachers said, well, you are never going to be able to accomplish that cause you will always treat only the victim……Oh dear, that caused a fuss too. I believed her though and I think she was correct. Person before the behaiviour…..thats the motto.

Won another bursary, seeing as fees are paid, they will pay $200 towards my internet connection…How good is that…? That equals three months of internet costs. WooHoo.

I am hungry now, going to have salad, apple and a bit of pork…. Hope that stays down.
